CRRT Simulation

January 17, 2023 | 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM ET | 15:00 UTC

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a high-risk/low-frequency therapy requiring highly trained ICU nurses to react and respond to pump alarms while considering the patient's condition. The wet lab/water drills previously used for training and education did not allow for the appropriate feedback nor prompt the critical thinking of the CRRT nurses while caring for actual patients and the pumps. We wanted a High-Fidelity Interactive CRRT Simulation program at Children's Mercy. A group from the CRRT program and the Center for Pediatric Simulation and Resuscitation worked together to create a simulated vascular circuit that allowed us to achieve our goal of CRRT Simulation. We will discuss how the team was able to create this simulation program, reproducing common patient and pump emergencies, while overcoming the challenges of using an actual CRRT circuit and high technology mannequin.

Meet the Speakers:

PJ Strack

PJ Strack graduated from Graceland University in Iowa with her Bachelor’s in Nursing. She has spent nearly two decades in the Pediatric/Cardiac Intensive Care Units at Children’s Mercy Hospital, with the last twelve years as part of the CRRT team and transitioned in 2018 to the Coordinator of the CRRT program. Her focus has been on education, new equipment installation, and developing and successfully implementing a new CRRT Simulation program.

Rachael Pedigo

Rachael Pedigo graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BSN in 2007.  She began her career as a new grad in the PICU where she was one of the original CRRT team members.  In 2018, she transitioned into her educator role in the simulation department, collaborating with many critical care simulation programs.  Having a personal understanding of the need for high-fidelity experiential training to manage critical patients receiving CRRT, she partnered with the clinical team to develop a simulation program to meet the needs of staff managing this therapy.

Zabrina Fox

Zabrina Fox graduated from the University of Missouri with her Bachelor’s in Nursing. She started her career at Children’s Mercy in their Pediatric/Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Her focus has been on mentorship for staff at the bedside while focusing on preceptors and the growth and development of ICU nurses by being a core instructor for PALS, BLS, and PEARS. She has been a member of the CRRT Team since the program started and was vital in developing and implementing the CRRT Simulation program.

Aiden McLuckie

Aiden McLuckie graduated from the University of Northern Michigan in 2012 with a BFA in Graphic Communication. Prior to joining the Center for Pediatric Simulation and Resuscitation at Children’s Mercy Hospital in 2019 his career was comprised of  a variety of IT roles. The combination of art and technology expediencies in his background lead him to his current role as Technology Coordinator. Aiden supports practical and technical innovations by collaborating with his team at any layer of the course development process. Aiden achieved Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) in June of 2022.

Robert Schremme

Robert Schremmer is a Pediatric Emergency Physician and the Medical Director for the Center for Pediatric Simulation and Resuscitation at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. He is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. Dr. Schremmer has been a simulationist for over 15 years.
